It’s July in Central California, which means that it’s almost time for the California Rodeo Salinas! Each year, the West comes alive in Salinas when the rodeo comes to town at the Salinas Sports Complex. This year, the rodeo runs from July 16 through July 19, and as your Central California real estate agent, I’m here to fill you in on everything you should know about this annual event!
The California Rodeo Salinas began back in 1911, when it was initially called the Wild West Show. It is the largest rodeo in California, with more than 700 top-ranked professional cowboys and cowgirls competing. Competitions include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and team roping.
Between competitions, attendees can enjoy trick riders and animal acts. Bull fighting, barrel racing and a raucous Industrial Calf Dressing competition also take place during the event. Plus, four of California’s own greatest young horsewomen will compete for the title of Miss California Rodeo Salinas.
Before the actual event begins on July 16, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied. Aerosmoith will perform a concert at the Salinas Sports Complex on July 10. On July 11, bring the whole family to Oldtown Salinas for the Kiddie Kapers Parade, kicking off at 6:30 p.m. The top cowboy and cowgirl from the kids’ parade will ride in the Colmo del Rodeo Parade, which kicks off at 8 p.m.
The Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering will take place at the Steinbeck Institute of Art & Culture in Salinas on Sunday, July 12. It combines cowboys, wine and poetry, so you can sit back, relax and appreciate the artistic side of the cowboy culture!
Before the official rodeo kicks off, you can enjoy a night of Professional Bull Riding on Wednesday, July 15. The riders will compete for a $40,000 purse.
The Rodeo Carnival is a family-friendly tradition since the beginning of the California Rodeo Salinas! Bring the kids and enjoy rides, games and food from July 10 to July 19 on Sun Street in Salinas. There will also be bounce houses and a petting zoo.
