8 Family-Friendly Activities to Enjoy Outdoors in Monterey County

Monterey County Activities
Kid-Friendly Monterey County

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors in Monterey County! There are so many activities to choose from, and many of them are family-friendly, so the little ones can get involved too. Take advantage of the gorgeous Central Coast region that you live in by getting out and enjoying a few of these activities as a family this summer.

As your Monterey County real estate agent, I’ve summed up some suggestions from See Monterey here:

1.  Spend a day at Dennis the Menace Park. The little ones can fly a kite on Seaside’s sandy shores while the older kids skate around at the new skateboard park.

2.  Bring the family golfing! Peter Hay Golf Course in Pebble Beach has family-friendly greens, and Rancho Canada and Laguna Seca have “mini-member rates” where you can golf after 3 p.m. for $10 per person.

3.  Head to Lake El Estero, where the kids can power their own paddle boat, or can co-paddle one with you! Enjoy the sights of nearby parks, and stop there afterward for playtime or a workout.

4.  Take a whale-watching cruise from Old Fisherman’s Wharf and try to spot whales swimming in our Central Coast oceans! California is one of the few places to see whales year-round.

5.  Take a hike at the Bird Island Trail in Point Lobos State Reserve. This simple trail provides access to two sandy beaches, Gibson and China Cove. The whole family will appreciate the views!

6.  Take the kids horseback riding so they can sit back and enjoy Monterey County views while petting and bonding with their horse. Check out Monterey Bay Equestrian Center for views along Salinas River State Beach.

7.  Pedal a bicycle for two, four or six! These are known as surreys here on the Central Coast, and you can rent one to ride along the Recreation Trail to Lovers Point Beach. Visit Adventures by the Sea or Blazing Saddles for a rental.

8.  Take a two-seater kayak out and follow your guide along Cannery Row. You’ll see sea lions, seals and other types of wildlife along the shore! Or, invent your own kayak trip and race the other members of your family.

Another family-friendly option that is always available is visiting Lake Nacimiento! You can spend a couple hours at the lake, or a full day, or a full weekend, depending on your preference. Enjoy hiking, swimming, boating, picnicking, camping, water sports, you name it!
