Free Fun in Monterey County This Summer

Free fun in Monterey County

Now that Memorial Day weekend is over, it’s time to get out and enjoy summertime on the Central Coast! As your Monterey County real estate agent, I am here to offer you suggestions for free family fun this summer. No one wants to spend a fortune over the summer season, and if you’re in the market for a new Central Coast home, doing more free things will help you save up a down payment!

Here are some options I came up with, with help from a recent See Monterey article:

  • Visit a lake or ocean! What more could you ask for on the Central Coast than a free day at a lake or beach? Head to Lake Nacimiento or Lake San Antonio for fishing, swimming, boating, camping, you name it. Head to the beach for sun bathing on the sand, surfing and riding the waves!
  • Walk or jog along a trail. One great option is the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, where you can watch boats come and go, people watch, or try to spot a whale! But you’ve got lots of trail options to choose from throughout the Central Coast.
  • Follow the Path of History through downtown Monterey and view all of the historic adobe buildings and gardens along the way. You’ll learn some Central Coast history you didn’t know before!
  • Visit art galleries. There are many located throughout the Central Coast region, but Carmel-by-the-Sea is one great option. You can explore hidden courtyards and passageways while you’re at it!
  • Bring the kids to Dennis the Menace Park at Lake El Estero. This park is extremely large and unique, it’ll keep them busy for hours! They’ll sleep soundly that night. It’s a great way to blow off steam during summer.
  • Bird watch. Monterey County has plenty of great options for this, including Carmel River State Beach, Garland Ranch Regional Park, and Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.
  • Drive along Highway 1. Lots of tourists come to do this over the summer season, but when was the last time you appreciated the vast views while cruising with the windows down and the radio up?
  • Go mountain biking. Ford Ord National Monument is a mountain biker’s paradise, with plenty of challenging trails to try out.
  • Visit a farmer’s market. There’s a market in a different Central Coast town every day of the week. You can go just to peruse and try samples, or purchase some of your groceries there and save a trip!
  • Get free appetizers. The Monterey Visitors Center at Lake El Estero has free appetizer vouchers for local restaurants.
