RISMedia recently shared a few tips on how to buy or sell real estate like a pro, even if you’re new at it. With these simple first steps, you’ll be on your way to feeling comfortable and confident with the process in no time!

If you are selling your Central Coast home, here are a couple first steps for you to take:

  • Improve curb appeal. First impressions matter! Stand by the street and try to look at your home with a neutral perspective. Better yet, ask a friend or neighbor to do it. Take note of the things that need improvement. It could be as simple as trimming bushes, mowing the lawn or removing lawn clutter, dirt and debris. It could also mean repainting your house numbers or mailbox, replacing lightbulbs in outdoor light fixtures, power washing your siding, or adding potted plants and flowers to your front porch. If any of these features are incredibly outdated or worn, consider replacing.
  • Optimize the space. Now it’s time to give your interior a walkthrough. Besides the obvious cleaning and decluttering you’ll need to do inside, RISMedia also suggests creating the illusion of extra square footage. For example, use the same paint in a lighter shade across rooms to create a seamless transition. You should also remove personal items, like family photos and kids’ artwork, and decorate with neutral colors. Hiring a professional cleaner isn’t a bad idea either.

  • Do your homework. Take a look at what some recent homes in the area have sold for, so you know what to expect. Decide what specific neighborhoods you’re interested in, so you can narrow your home search. Check out your credit report and credit score, and if they’re in good shape, get preapproved. This way, you’ll know what you can afford and can save yourself heartache down the road by not falling in love with a home outside of your budget.
  • Ask the right questions. This may be the biggest investment you make in your lifetime, so get all the information you can! Directly ask the seller or seller’s agent what’s wrong with the house. Ask to see disclosure forms about issues with the house. Check the age of major home systems, such as heating, plumbing, etc. Hire an independent home inspection professional. You can also ask the seller about how they get along with neighbors, how quiet the neighborhood is, why they are moving and what local businesses they enjoy.
