Morro Bay Officially a Bicycle Friendly Community!

Central California News
Morro Bay is officially bike-friendly

If you love riding your bike around Morro Bay, you’re not alone. The League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of Morro Bay with a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFBSM) award. Just over 325 communities have earned this award across the country.

All of Central California is bike-friendly, with a plethora of biking trails available in every community. Biking is gaining speed in almost every state. It’s an environmentally-friendly option for transportation, and it’s one of the best exercises you can do for burning calories. Bicycling more than 20 mph is tied with running among 150 exercises assessed!

If you don’t own a bike, you can rent one in Morro Bay and see if you enjoy it enough to make an investment. Options for bike rentals include The Bike Shop on Main Street and Farmer’s Kites, Surreys, Bikes & More! on Front Street.

The Morro Bay Bike Path winds its way through much of the city, including points of interest, such as Bayshore Bluffs Park. This 3.2 acres of natural meadow is a great place to unwind and enjoy nature while getting in exercise and possibly spotting local wildlife. Cerra Alto is a four-mile loop near Morro Bay that is popular among mountain bikers. It features a river and is rated as moderate.

For an easier biking trail, check out the Morro Bay Harborwalk. This runs along the surf and beaches of Central California, with the rugged cliffs in the background. You’ll pass Morro Rock, a volcanic formation that rises over 500 feet above the water, along with plenty of wildlife, like sea lions, otters, falcons and other types of birds. The trail ends at the Embarcadero, where you can stop to shop or eat.

Morro Bay has a new Bike Route Map, which provides trail locations and information, along with the location of public restrooms, bike shops and other places of interest for cyclists. You can pick one of these up for free at Morro Bay Visitors Center and other locations throughout the city, or you can download it from the city’s website.

There are plenty more trails in and around Morro Bay. Central California is loaded with biking trails, both in and around towns, and trails that run along the shore or head up into the mountains and parks.
