Tips to Keep Your Lake Nacimiento Vacation Home Secure in the Off-Season!

OakShoresOne of the things I like best about being an Oak Shores and Lake Nacimiento real estate agent is that Bradley, CA, including the popular communities of Heritage Ranch, Oak Shores and Lake Nacimiento, is a safe and desirable location all year round. Families, couples and friends flock to the region during its peak summer season to soak up the sunshine, enjoy beautiful weather and picturesque scenery at all turns, indulge in water sports, boating, wineries or just regular relaxation and enjoy the safety that comes with our secure community. Residents and vacationers alike take pride in their Lake Nacimiento home, whether as owners or renters. However, Oak Shores Realty realizes that it can be hard to keep a close eye on your Lake Nacimiento real estate or Oak Shores real estate during the off-season. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure that your property is safe and secured while you’re away:

  • Remove Mailbox. It is never a good idea to receive any mail at your vacation home. When mail piles up, it can be an easy giveaway to others that there is nobody living at the property. By removing the mailbox completely, you can avoid the headache and security risks of losing correspondence. Additionally, being conscious of the privacy settings on your various social networks to avoid letting others know when the property is occupied and unoccupied will add an additional level of security.
  • Avoid Water and Fire Hazards. Ensure pipes don’t freeze in the colder months by keeping your thermostat lowered, but not off completely. The general rule of thumb is that your thermostat shouldn’t be any lower than 55 degrees to help prevent frozen pipes, sprinkler bursts and ice damming. Unplugging unnecessary electronics while you’re away (such as televisions, stereos, computers and coffee machines) will protect them against power surges and fire hazards. Additionally, shutting off the main water valve and any non-essential breakers in the home’s electrical box will protect your home for longer absences.
  • Place a Lockbox on the Property. While leaving an extra key beneath a rock or a bush can be a good idea when your vacation home is occupied during the high season, I always advise my clients to place a secured combination lockbox on the property instead. This ensures that the combination opens to your spare key and only you can access it. You can also leave a spare key with your local Lake Nacimiento real estate agent for safekeeping.
